SAN FRANCISCO — As the San Francisco sky dimmed over Oracle Park Monday evening, a crescendo swelled not from the foghorn nor the fireworks, but from the grandstands. “Jung Hoo Lee, Jung Hoo Lee, Jung Hoo Lee.” The chant poured from fans like a spring rain, rhythmic and reverent.
Until that moment, Lee had little to show for his night at the plate. The 25-year-old center fielder had been plagued by the kind of bad luck that makes hard-hit balls find gloves instead of grass. Coming off an 0-for-4 performance the day before, Lee’s first three trips to the plate against the Milwaukee Brewers produced nothing but frustration — a string of well-struck outs that left the scoreboard unchanged.

As twilight settled over Angel Stadium on Saturday night, San Francisco Giants center fielder Jung Hoo Lee kept his hot bat alive — just barely. After going hitless in his first three plate appearances, Lee laced a single in his final at-bat, preserving his hitting streak at five games and keeping his name firmly in the National League batting title conversation.
Lee, who has now recorded a hit in nine of his last ten games, saw his average dip only slightly from .361 to .355, maintaining a razor-thin margin behind the league leaders. He currently ranks third in the National League batting race, trailing the top spot by just six points.
Through April 20, Lee’s offensive resume is beginning to resemble that of a true MVP candidate: a .355 batting average (3rd), .412 on-base percentage (T-9th), .632 slugging (5th), and a 1.044 OPS (5th). In a season that has steadily transformed from a quiet breakout to a full-blown All-Star campaign, Jung Hoo Lee of the San Francisco Giants continues to write a compelling narrative in his sophomore Major League year. On Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park, Lee delivered yet again — this time as a pinch hitter — pushing his batting average to a staggering .348, now tied for second in the National League.
The only players above or alongside him are St. Louis Cardinals' Brendan Donovan (.373) and Padres’ superstar Fernando Tatis Jr., who also sits at .348. Lee’s offensive metrics extend far beyond average. His .652 slugging percentage and 1.055 OPS both rank third in the league. He also stands second in runs scored (19), just behind Shohei Ohtani’s 21, and leads the NL in doubles with 10. With 24 hits (4th), 14 RBIs (11th), and a .403 on-base percentage (11th), Lee is well on pace for his first All-Star selection.
San Francisco, however, could not match Lee’s individual brilliance on the team scoreboard. The Giants fell 6–4 to the Philadelphia Phillies, splitting their four-game set at two wins apiece. On Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park, Lee, the 25-year-old center fielder from South Korea, provided a vivid example of why the Giants are reaping the rewards of their international investment. Batting third, Lee delivered two hits — including a double — scored twice, and drove in two crucial runs as the Giants overwhelmed the Philadelphia Phillies 11-4.
In the very first inning, Lee ambushed a well-located 82-mph changeup from Phillies ace Aaron Nola — a pitcher carrying a $172 million contract — and sent it sharply to right field, sparking an early lead. The double remains Jung Hoo Lee’s calling card. After a rare off night on Monday, the San Francisco Giants' center fielder and No. 3 hitter bounced back with characteristic precision on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Though his team came up short in a 4-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, Lee’s resurgence reinforced why he remains at the heart of the Giants’ impressive start.
Lee’s performance on Monday — an uncharacteristic 0-for-5 showing — saw a notable dip in his batting statistics. But just 24 hours later, he answered with authority. In the sixth inning, he jumped on the first pitch from left-hander Jesús Luzardo and drove it to the gap for a double. Two innings later, he delivered again — this time pulling a 100-mph inside fastball from reliever José Alvarado into right field for an RBI single that brought the Giants within two runs.
While San Francisco couldn’t complete the rally, Lee’s individual resurgence pushed his season batting average to .333, tied for sixth in the National League. The third pitch Lee Jung-hoo ever saw at Yankee Stadium was not one he was likely to forget — nor were the fans in the Bronx.
With two runners on and no outs in the top of the first inning, the San Francisco Giants’ center fielder turned on an 89 mph sinker from Marcus Stroman and sent it soaring over the right-field fence, igniting a five-run rally that set the tone for a 9-1 Giants victory. The game was eventually called in the sixth inning due to heavy rain, but not before Lee had made his presence known.
The three-run shot marked Lee’s first home run of the 2025 season. He later reached base twice more via walks, and finishing 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. His performance raised his batting average to .340 — good for sixth in the National League — and boosted his OPS to a pristine 1.000.
“It was really impressive,” said Giants manager Bob Melvin. “To step into Yankee Stadium for the first time, in that kind of weather, and deliver a home run like that? It gave us a big lift.”
Lee, who played for the Kiwoom Heroes in Korea’s KBO League prior to joining the Giants, noted the stark difference in approach between leagues. “In the KBO, a game like this wouldn’t have even started,” Lee said through an interpreter. “We had a lot of rainouts. The game itself was delayed 26 minutes due to inclement weather and played in a brisk 44 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius). After a three-run rally in the fifth and a bases-loaded threat in the sixth, umpires finally suspended the contest with two outs and the Giants firmly in control. Thirty minutes later, the game was declared final.
Giants left-hander Robbie Ray earned the win, tossing four innings of one-run ball and striking out seven. Due to the rain-shortened nature of the game, Ray was credited with the victory after just four innings on the mound.
For Lee, the night was another step forward — and another glimpse of just how bright his star could become in Major League Baseball.

After two consecutive shutouts and a 5-0 deficit by the third inning, the San Francisco Giants appeared on the verge of a demoralizing sweep at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds. But then came Jung Hoo Lee.
The 25-year-old South Korean outfielder, batting third and playing center field, ignited the Giants’ offense on Wednesday night with a 3-for-5 performance that included a triple, a double, and a critical run scored. Lee’s contributions not only ended the club’s 21-inning scoring drought but also fueled an 8-6 extra-inning comeback victory that snapped the team’s three-game losing streak.
Lee’s RBI triple in the fourth inning drove in Willy Adames and gave the Giants their first run of the series. In the sixth, trailing 6-1, Lee led off with a sharp single to right, later scoring from third on a wild pitch after advancing on a Mike Yastrzemski double. The National League West is quickly becoming Major League Baseball’s most volatile division. With a single day of results, first place flipped to third — and back again.
On Tuesday night, the San Francisco Giants suffered their second consecutive shutout, falling 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds at Oracle Park. The loss dropped the Giants to 8–3 on the season, half a game behind the San Diego Padres (9–3), who also lost. The Los Angeles Dodgers (9–4) were defeated as well, meaning the division’s top three teams all lost on the same day — a rare alignment in baseball’s fiercest race.
Despite the trio of losses, all three clubs remain among MLB’s elite in terms of overall record. The Padres, Giants, and Dodgers still rank first, third, and fourth respectively in league-wide standings, with only the red-hot New York Mets (8–3) disrupting the West’s dominance. The fifth-best team, the Los Angeles Angels (7–3), only reinforces the West Coast’s power surge early in the season.
For San Francisco’s center fielder Jung Hoo Lee, Tuesday was a night of “almosts.” Batting third, the second-year Korean standout went 0-for-4 — a line that hardly reflects the quality of his contact. In the sixth inning, Lee scorched a sharp ground ball to second baseman Gavin Lux, who mishandled the play. The crowd anticipated a single, but the official scorer ruled it an error.
Later, in the ninth inning, Lee drove a sinking liner toward shallow left field — the kind of hit that often falls in front of charging outfielders. But Reds left fielder Blake Dunn made a spectacular sliding catch to preserve the shutout. Earlier in the game, Lee had also lined out directly to Lux, summing up a night where solid contact went unrewarded.
It was Lee’s first hitless performance since Opening Day, bringing his batting average down to .300. On the other side, Landen Roupp (0–1) pitched admirably in his second start of the year, scattering seven hits and yielding just one run over six innings — a tough-luck loss.
The only run came in the third inning, when José Trevino grounded out to second, scoring Spencer Steer. Steer had a standout night with two doubles, his first of the season, while Lux also added a double and single to his tally.
It marked the Reds’ fourth 1-0 game of the month — though the first one they’ve managed to win, after dropping the previous three.
As the Giants prepare for the series finale, they’ll hope for not just better fortune, but better run support — and for Jung Hoo Lee’s contact to finally start finding the grass again.

'죽음의 조' 월드컵 축구 조편성 추첨이 열린 다음 날 꼭 나오는 표현이다. 죽음의 조에 속하면 다음 라운드에 올라가기 쉽지 않다. 죽음의 조는 모두가 강자이기 때문이다. 메이저리그 야구(MLB)에도 죽음의 조가 있다. 바로 내셔널리그 서부조.
NL 서부조에는 메이저리그 전체 승률 1,2,4위가 있다. 샌디에이고 파드레스(9승2패), 샌프란시스코 자이언츠(8승2패), LA 다저스(9승3패)가 내셔널리그 서부조 소속이다. 다저스는 전체 1위였다가 최근 부진으로 리그 전체 4위로 밀려났다. 한 조에 이렇게 높은 승률팀이 모여 있기 쉽지 않다. 보통 강한 팀 한두 팀, 어중간한 팀 한두 팀, 하위권 한두 팀으로 조가 편성되는데 올해는 세 팀이 우뚝솟아 있다.

The phrase “Group of Death” is typically reserved for the world’s biggest soccer tournaments — a way to describe a grouping of elite teams that leaves little room for error. Yet the same description now fits Major League Baseball’s National League West, where the early season has already been shaped by heavyweight clashes and shifting dominance.
Three of MLB’s top four teams by winning percentage reside in the NL West: the San Diego Padres (9–2), the San Francisco Giants (8–2), and the Los Angeles Dodgers (9–3). The Dodgers, once at the top of the league, have recently slipped to fourth overall. In most seasons, such talent is spread thin across divisions. This year, they’re concentrated.
The Giants, who entered Monday night as the best team in baseball, dropped to second following a 2–0 shutout loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Jung Hoo Lee, their rising star in center field, went 1-for-4 while batting third, with no extra-base hits or runs. His season average fell slightly to .333.
But numbers alone didn’t define his night.
In the sixth inning, Lee nearly changed the game with one swing. Facing Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene — a flamethrower by every definition — he lined a 99.6 mph fastball into the gap in right-center. The ball left his bat at 103.7 mph and traveled 384 feet before falling into a glove near the warning track. According to Statcast, it would have been a home run in 19 of 30 major league parks. “I thought it would go over,” Lee said after the game. “But the wind didn’t help.”

While the Giants recently launched a designated “Jung Hoo Crew” section for weekend games, Monday night saw the spontaneous arrival of 51 fans clad in white T-shirts and flame-colored wigs, calling themselves the “Hoo Lee Gans” — a playful twist on the word “hooligans.”
As for Greene, the Reds' starter nearly joined the exclusive club of pitchers to throw a “Maddux” — a complete-game shutout in under 100 pitches. But Lee’s two-out single in the ninth spoiled the feat. Greene left after 8.2 innings, allowing four hits, walking none, and striking out seven.
