Lee Kang-in Secures Military Exemption after South Korea's Victory in the Asian Games

Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) young midfielder, Lee Kang-in, has been granted a significant military service exemption following South Korea's triumph in the 19th Asian Games.

On October 7th, local time, in Hangzhou, China, Lee played a pivotal role for about 70 minutes in the men's football final, which saw South Korea edge out Japan with a 2-1 victory. This win marks South Korea's third consecutive gold in the Asian Games, and with it, all participating players, including Lee, receive military benefits.

The importance of such an exemption cannot be understated, particularly for South Korean players plying their trade in international leagues. Five years ago, during the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, South Korea clinched another victory, which allowed stars like Kim Min-jae (now at Bayern Munich), Son Heung-min (Tottenham), Hwang In-beom (Zvezda), and Hwang Ui-jo (Norwich) to enjoy the same military perks. This provided these players with an uninterrupted opportunity to focus on their leagues or make significant moves to European teams.

Fans globally, especially those of Son Heung-min, had fervently hoped and cheered for South Korea's success in that edition of the Asian Games. The stakes were incredibly high for Son, as it was his last chance to secure the military service exemption.

For the 22-year-old Lee Kang-in, the recent Asian Games held particular significance. Although both the Asian Games and the Olympics occur once every four years, obtaining a gold medal in the Asian Games holds a higher probability for military exemption compared to the stringent requirement of a minimum of a bronze medal in the Olympics.

When Lee Kang-in signed his contract with PSG, a clause was reportedly included concerning his release for the Asian Games, underlining the importance of his participation. Hence, during the 2023-2024 regular season, Lee made the trip to Hangzhou from Paris to represent his nation and grab his military exemption opportunity.

Football analysts predict that, much like Son Heung-min and Kim Min-jae who soared to greater heights post their military exemptions, Lee Kang-in is poised for a similar trajectory in his promising career.
