Meanwhile, Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees is on a home run pace reminiscent of the game's all-time greats. As of August 29th, Judge has blasted 51 home runs, putting him on track to reach the 60-home run mark. Having made history in 2022 by hitting 62 home runs, becoming the first player in the post-steroid era to reach that number, Judge now has his sights set on becoming the first player without performance-enhancing drug allegations to achieve two 60+ home run seasons. While Sammy Sosa accomplished this feat three times, and Mark McGwire twice, both players' legacies are tainted by their links to banned substances.

 

Achieving 60 home runs would place Judge in a rarefied class, inviting comparisons to Babe Ruth, who hit 59 home runs in 1921 and 60 in 1927.

 

Ruth’s legacy as a two-way player is something that only Ohtani has come close to matching, if not surpassing. Ruth, a dominant pitcher turned legendary slugger, compiled a 94-46 record with a 2.28 ERA while leading the league in home runs—a feat unmatched until Ohtani came along.

 

Analysts argue that Ohtani has already eclipsed Ruth's legacy, noting that Ruth did not consistently play both ways over a prolonged period, nor was he a threat on the basepaths like Ohtani, who has proven to be a formidable base stealer in addition to his pitching and hitting prowess.

 

The simultaneous dominance of two such legendary figures in one season is a rarity. While other stars like Juan Soto of the Yankees and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals are also having stellar seasons, their accomplishments seem overshadowed by the towering figures of Ohtani and Judge. Soto’s impressive tally of 37 home runs, 95 RBIs, and a .291 batting average is MVP-worthy, and Witt Jr.’s .344 average, 28 home runs, and 82 RBIs mark a career year, but neither can compare to the spectacle of Ohtani and Judge. Even Marcell Ozuna of the Atlanta Braves, chasing a Triple Crown with a .308 average, 98 RBIs, and 37 home runs, finds his stellar season somewhat diminished in comparison.

 

In other news, the Dodgers reached their 80th win of the season (against 54 losses) with a 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, securing their position atop the National League standings. Ohtani had an uncharacteristically quiet game, going 0-for-5, which dropped his batting average to .292, now 16 points behind Ozuna. Starter Bobby Miller struggled early, giving up three runs in the fifth inning, but managed to secure his second win of the season. The Dodgers’ bullpen held strong, with Phillips closing out the ninth for the save.

With this, he becomes the first player in MLB history to achieve both 43 home runs and 43 stolen bases in a single season, surpassing the previous record held by Alex Rodriguez, who had 42 home runs and 42 stolen bases. Ohtani is now the inaugural member of the 43-43 club. Incredibly, Ohtani has recorded both a home run and a stolen base in 11 games this season, just two short of Rickey Henderson's single-season record. If he maintains his current pace, Ohtani is projected to surpass the 50-50 mark with ease and pass Henderson. Having become the sixth player ever to join the 40-40 club earlier this season, Ohtani is now in a position to set new records daily. In the game, Ohtani went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs, hitting a home run, and stealing a base, which boosted his season batting average to .294. His 43 home runs give him a six-homer lead over second-place Marcell Ozuna, and his 96 RBIs put him just two behind Ozuna. Ohtani trails Ozuna by 15 points in batting average, keeping his quest for the Triple Crown alive and making every game a thrilling chase for personal milestones. The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their lead to 10-5 with Ohtani's solo homer in the eighth inning, but the ninth inning saw a scare as they allowed four runs. Ultimately, they held on for a narrow 10-9 victory. Clayton Kershaw started for the Dodgers but was pulled after just one inning due to a toe issue, giving up three earned runs. With this win, the Dodgers improved to 81-54, while the Diamondbacks fell to 76-59, widening the gap to five games.

 

 

오타니, 징검다리 추세만 깬다면 60-60과 트리플 크라운도 도전해볼만 (Game 136 & 137, 남은 경기 25경기, 8월31일 & 9월1일). 두 경기는 맹타, 다음엔 빈타. 오타니가 요즘 보이는 타격 추세다. 그는 지난 8월23일부터 두 경기 잘하고 그 다음 경기는 망치는 것을 반복했다. 일종의 징검다리 현상이다. 최근 2경기에서 호타준족임을 과시했던 오타니는 1일(미국 기준) 경기에서 4타수무안타(삼진 3개)로 부진했다. 시즌 타율은 2할9푼1리로 내려갔고 타율 1위 마르셀 오수나에 1푼8리차로 멀어졌다. 전날 홈런을 추가, 시즌 44-43을 기록한 오타니는 남은 두 경기에서 부상만 없다면 50-50을 기록할 것이 확실시된다. 8월에 그렇게 부진했음에도 홈런 12개, 도루 15개를 기록했기 때문이다. 9월에도 만약 8월과 비슷한 기록을 낸다면 오타니는 56-58로 시즌을 마치게 된다. 그런데 만약 그의 타격이 9월에 살아난다면, 60-60도 아예 불가능한 수치처럼 보이지는 않는다. 홈런 16개, 도루 17개가 남은 25경기에서 불가능한 수치일까. 50-50도 대단하기에 욕심을 낼 필요가 없지만 그가 늘 말하는 '홈런과 도루수가 늘어나면 소속팀에 공헌하는 것'이기에 그가 도전을 멈출 필요는 없는 것 같다. 그가 두 경기 맹타 후 한 경기 빈타의 추세를 깨고 연일 맹타를 날린다면 60-60도 꿈꿀만 하다. 그렇게 된다면 트리플 크라운도 여전히 불가능한 도전은 아니다. 오타니는 홈런 단독 선두를 질주하고 있고, 타점은 98점으로 오수나와 공동 1위이며, 타율만 끌어올리면 그에게 트리플 크라운이 여전히 불가능한 도전은 아니다. 한편, 다저스는 31일 애리조나 디백스에 8-6으로 승리했지만 1일 경기에서는 10-3으로 완패, 시즌 82승55패를 기록했다. 애리조나와 샌디에고에 5경기차로 앞서 있다.

Still, his recent streak has been a study in contrasts. His performance recently showcases the inconsistency that's been a hallmark of his recent outings: two standout games followed by a slump. On September 1st, Ohtani went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, dropping his batting average to .291. This was a significant fall from grace for the player who had dazzled in the two preceding games. As of now, he trails batting leader Marcell Ozuna by 18 points. Yet, despite these ebbs and flows, Ohtani is on the brink of making history. His home run count stands at 44, and with 43 stolen bases, he is tantalizingly close to the unprecedented 50-50 mark. Considering how he played in August—despite what some might consider a slump—he still managed to hit 12 home runs and swipe 15 bases. Should he replicate these numbers in September, Ohtani would finish the season with around 56 home runs and 58 stolen bases. This means that a historic 60-60 season, previously thought to be unachievable, is not entirely out of reach. With 25 games remaining, 16 home runs and 17 stolen bases are within the realm of possibility.

 

However, for Ohtani, it’s not just about reaching these milestones for their own sake. He has consistently emphasized that increased home runs and stolen bases contribute directly to his team’s success. His focus is clear: if these personal achievements aid his team, then they are worth pursuing. Breaking the pattern of two strong games followed by a weak one could be crucial for Ohtani not only to reach 60-60 but also to put himself in contention for the Triple Crown. While he currently leads the league in home runs and shares the RBI lead with Ozuna at 98, his batting average remains the biggest hurdle. A surge in September could put him back in the race.

 

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to solidify their lead in the National League West. They secured an 8-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 31 but stumbled with a 10-3 loss the following day, bringing their record to 82-55. The Dodgers still maintain a comfortable five-game lead over both Arizona and San Diego, positioning themselves strongly for the postseason.

 

As the season winds down, all eyes will be on Ohtani.
