With a nine-game gap behind the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies, the Braves' playoff hopes now rest entirely on securing a wild-card spot. Another piece of good news was the strong performance of starting pitcher Walker Buehler. Despite issuing five walks, he delivered an impressive outing, allowing just three hits and one earned run over six innings while striking out five. Still, his recent streak has been a study in contrasts. His performance recently showcases the inconsistency that's been a hallmark of his recent outings: two standout games followed by a slump. On September 1st, Ohtani went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, dropping his batting average to .291. This was a significant fall from grace for the player who had dazzled in the two preceding games. As of now, he trails batting leader Marcell Ozuna by 18 points. Yet, despite these ebbs and flows, Ohtani is on the brink of making history. His home run count stands at 44, and with 43 stolen bases, he is tantalizingly close to the unprecedented 50-50 mark. Considering how he played in August—despite what some might consider a slump—he still managed to hit 12 home runs and swipe 15 bases. Should he replicate these numbers in September, Ohtani would finish the season with around 56 home runs and 58 stolen bases. This means that a historic 60-60 season, previously thought to be unachievable, is not entirely out of reach. With 25 games remaining, 16 home runs and 17 stolen bases are within the realm of possibility.

 

However, for Ohtani, it’s not just about reaching these milestones for their own sake. He has consistently emphasized that increased home runs and stolen bases contribute directly to his team’s success. His focus is clear: if these personal achievements aid his team, then they are worth pursuing. Breaking the pattern of two strong games followed by a weak one could be crucial for Ohtani not only to reach 60-60 but also to put himself in contention for the Triple Crown. While he currently leads the league in home runs and shares the RBI lead with Ozuna at 98, his batting average remains the biggest hurdle. A surge in September could put him back in the race.

At this pace, 50-50 seems almost inevitable, and Ohtani might even aim for 55-55 or 60-60. To reach the remarkable 60-60 milestone, Ohtani would need to hit 16 more home runs and steal 14 more bases. While the home runs may pose a challenge, given Ohtani's ability to go on impressive home run streaks, hitting 60 is not out of the question. The stolen bases appear more achievable; if he continues his aggressive base-running style, he could reach this target without much difficulty. The correlation between Ohtani’s performance and the Dodgers’ success is clear. When Ohtani is both hitting home runs and stealing bases, the Dodgers’ chances of winning skyrocket. Especially with no home runs hit in four games in September so far, the outlook for reaching 55-55 is becoming more uncertain. Ohtani still leads the National League with 44 home runs and ranks second with 99 RBIs, but his increasing hitless games have caused his batting average to drop to .290, placing him eighth in the league. At this rate, achieving the Triple Crown looks challenging. However, he still has the chance to aim for 50-50 and 55-55. Earlier this summer, in July and August, Ohtani’s remarkable surge in both homers and stolen bases made a 60-60 season seem within reach. However, as he has cooled off in September, the focus has shifted to the still-unprecedented 50-50 accomplishment. Even 50-50 would be a groundbreaking record. Ohtani’s stat line after Monday’s game is nothing short of extraordinary: 46 home runs (1st in the National League), 47 stolen bases (2nd), a .292 batting average (5th), 101 RBIs (tied for 1st), and an OPS of .993 (1st). He also leads the league in slugging percentage (.617) and is 4th in on-base percentage (.376). With these numbers, Ohtani’s claim to this year’s MVP award seems almost certain. On the day, Ohtani went 2-for-4, scoring twice and drawing a walk, raising his batting average slightly. The slugger is expected to reach the 50-50 milestone by the weekend or early next week. Meanwhile, the Dodgers suffered a 2-6 defeat, largely due to starting pitcher Landon Knack’s struggles, allowing five earned runs over two innings. With a current record of 87-60, the Dodgers still hold the second-best win percentage behind the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball. However, the team faces growing concerns over their pitching rotation. Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Gavin Stone (shoulder) are both on the injured list, while Clayton Kershaw (toe) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (rotator cuff) are also dealing with injuries.
