In 2021, he recorded a career-high 26 stolen bases with the LA Angels and has consistently stolen over 10 bases each year. Ichiro Suzuki, a legendary figure in Major League Baseball, recorded 117 home runs and 509 stolen bases during his career. Ohtani now follows in his footsteps as the second Japanese player to join the prestigious 100-100 club. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts commented that Ohtani has returned to full fitness. Previously hampered by a hamstring injury that affected his hitting and base running, Ohtani's recovery was evident as he also recorded a hit for the first time in a while. The 40-40 club, comprising players who have hit 40 home runs and stolen 40 bases in a single season, has seen only five members in MLB history: Jose Canseco (1988), Barry Bonds (1996), Alex Rodriguez (1998), Alfonso Soriano (2006), and Ronald Acuña Jr. (2023). The 40-40 stat epitomizes the term "power-speed combination." Ohtani has already set the record for the most stolen bases by a designated hitter (25 steals in 2021), and joining the 40-40 club would make him the first full-time designated hitter to achieve this milestone. In a period where multi-hit games are rare, Mookie Betts' batting average has dropped to .308, and Shohei Ohtani's to .306. Ohtani, who has been in a slump recently, went hitless in four at-bats. After the game, he commented, "When you're not performing well, it's like putting yourself under a microscope, and that's what I'm doing right now." He's working to identify the cause of his slump. The Dodgers were stymied by Rangers' starter Michael Lorenzen, who pitched seven strong innings, allowing just four hits and one run. Andy Pages' home run saved the Dodgers from a shutout, but they ultimately lost 1-3. The Dodgers now stand at 42-28 for the season, while the Rangers improved to 33-35. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Freddie Freeman’s decisive RBI single led to a 4-3 victory for the Dodgers. With this win, the Dodgers improved to 43-28 (first in the AL West), while the Royals fell to 40-31 (second in the AL Central). Ohtani’s season batting average rose to .306, maintaining his fifth position in the National League. Dodgers’ starter Gavin Stone delivered a quality start, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs over 7 innings, but left the mound with the game tied at 3-3, missing his chance to secure his eighth win.

Tyler Glasnow, a rising candidate for the Cy Young Award, delivered an impressive performance as the starting pitcher. He pitched seven innings, allowing only three hits and no runs, while striking out nine and walking just one. This stellar outing secured his seventh win of the season (against five losses) and lowered his ERA to 3.00. With his two home runs in this game, Ohtani now has 19 for the season, closing in on National League leader Marcell Ozuna, who has 20. Ohtani's season batting average has risen to .309, ranking him fourth in the NL, while he is seventh in RBIs with 46 and second in OPS at 0.976. Ohtani is emerging as a strong candidate for the MVP award this season, and he is also in the running for the Triple Crown and the distinction of becoming the first designated hitter to join the 40-40 club.
