In the history of Major League Baseball, Ohtani is the only designated hitter to win MVP, and this was possible because of his exceptional pitching. In other words, his defensive contributions made him an MVP.

 

In 2005, David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox, as a designated hitter, posted a .300 batting average, a .397 on-base percentage, a .604 slugging percentage, 47 home runs, 148 RBIs, and a 1.001 OPS. However, the MVP that year went to Yankees star infielder Alex Rodriguez. The only reason Ortiz lost to Rodriguez was his lack of defensive contributions. This situation has led some to believe that Ohtani, who is not pitching this season, will face a fate similar to Ortiz. However, it is too early to conclude that Ohtani will not win MVP. If Ohtani achieves a Triple Crown and a 50-40 season, the baseball writers will have no choice but to give him first-place votes.

 

Outstanding performances historically hold a significant advantage in MVP races. The Triple Crown means leading the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs. A 50-40 season signifies 50 home runs and 40 stolen bases. If Ohtani accomplishes a 50-40 season, it will be unprecedented in MLB history. The Triple Crown is also a rare feat. These two achievements alone make Ohtani a strong MVP candidate. There have been many instances where players won MVP without excelling in both hitting and fielding. Starting pitchers winning MVP is a prime example. Justin Verlander won the MVP as a starting pitcher in 2011. Roger Clemens was also an MVP as a starting pitcher in 1986. There are even instances of relief pitchers winning MVP, like Dennis Eckersley in 1992. These players did not contribute offensively but earned MVP honors through their outstanding pitching.

This marks his fourth consecutive game with a steal. The Dodgers seemed poised for victory after scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, with Tyler Glasnow pitching seven strong innings and allowing just three runs. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the ninth inning. Leading 5-3, Blake Treinen blew the save, and in the tenth inning, Alex Vesia surrendered a walk-off single to Donovan Solano, resulting in a 6-5 loss for the Dodgers. Ha-Seong Kim, who scored the winning run for the Padres, went 0-for-4 in the game. Ohtani's season batting average dropped to .311, though he still leads the National League. He also remains the home run leader with 32, just one ahead of Marcel Ozuna, who has been closing the gap. Ozuna's recent surge has also put him eight RBIs ahead of Ohtani in the league standings. Nevertheless, Ohtani continues to lead the league in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS, while ranking third in stolen bases. With this defeat, the Dodgers now stand at 63-45, while the Padres improve to 58-51. The gap between the two teams is now just 5.5 games.
