Los Angeles (June 2) - On May 31, Dave Roberts, the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, celebrated his 52nd birthday. During a Q&A session with reporters in the Dodgers dugout on June 2, Roberts detailed a special birthday gift he received from none other than Shohei Ohtani.

"Shohei gave me a great gift," Roberts described. "The gift was labeled Japanese whiskey, and it was beautifully wrapped. He also gave me a amazing box of chocolates. They were thin, square chocolates," Roberts elaborated.

In addition to Ohtani's thoughtful gift, Roberts mentioned receiving Chateau wine, a jacket, and joked about expecting a Porsche soon. The Porsche comment was made in a lighthearted manner.. This jest stems from an episode last December when Ohtani gifted a Porsche to Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly’s wife, Ashley, as an appreciation for giving up his number 17 jersey.

Earlier in May, Roberts joked that if Ohtani broke the Dodgers’ home run record for Japanese-born players, he should gift Roberts a Porsche. In response, Ohtani humorously presented Roberts with a toy Porsche, a gesture that garnered significant attention. Roberts was delighted by the prank, saying that Ohtani feeling comfortable enough to joke around like that shows he feels at home with our team.

Japanese reporters, who are a common presence at Dodger Stadium, were eager to know more about the Japanese whiskey gifted by Ohtani, even showing photos to confirm the brand.

On the field, Ohtani arrived early for his recovery exercises from Tommy John surgery. Roberts commented on his progress that his arm stroke looks good, and he's doing well with his rehab exercises.

However, after his throwing session, Ohtani's expression was not particularly positive. As he left the field, he grimaced, indicating that his arm might not be in perfect condition just yet. He is expected to return this year.

[다저스타디움= 박성훈 기자] 데이브 로버츠 LA 다저스 감독이 오타니 쇼헤이에게 받은 생일 선물을 소개했다. 5월31일이 52번째 생일이었던 로버츠 감독은 2일(현지 시간 기준) 다저스 덕아웃에서 가진 기자들과의 Q&A 시간에 오타니에게서 받은 선물을 상세히 소개했다.

그는 “쇼헤이(오타니)는 나에게 멋진 선물을 줬다. 선물에는 일본 위스키라고 씌어 있었고 포장을 아주 멋지게 했다. 그리고 멋진 초콜릿 박스를 선물로 받았다. 네모난 얇은 초콜릿이었다”라고 상세히 묘사했다. 

그는 이 밖에 다른 선수들에게서 샤토 와인, 재킷 등의 선물을 받았다고 말하면서 포르셰 자동차가 곧 오지않겠냐는 농담을 던지기도 했다. 포르셰 선물은 사실 농담반 진담반이었다. 오타니는 지난해 12월 다저스 투수 조 켈리가 등번호 17번을 포기해준 것에 대해 감사의 표시로 그의 아내인 애쉴리에게 포르셰를 선물한 바 있다.

5월초 로버츠는 오타니가 자신이 갖고 있는 일본 태생 선수 다저스 홈런 기록을 깨면 포르셰를 선물해야 한다고 농담을 한 바 있는데 이에 오타니는 포르계 장난감을 감독에게 선물해 화제가 됐다. 로버츠 감독은 “오타니가 그런 장난을 할 수 있다는 것은 우리 팀에 있는 것을 편안하게 생각하는 것”이라며 기뻐한 바 있다. 

다저스타디움에는 일본 기자들이 많은데 이들은 오타니가 어떤 일본 위스키를 선물했는지 사진을 보여주며 확인하는 질문을 하기도 했다. 

이날 오타니는 일찍 필드로 나와 토미 존 수술에서 회복하는 운동을 했는데 로버츠 감독은 이에 대해 “팔 스트로크가 좋고 회복운동을 잘하고 있다. 오늘 몇 개를 던졌는지는 모르지만 다시 복귀하는 준비를 잘하고 있다고 믿는다.”라고 말했다. 

한편, 오타니는 공을 던진 후 표정이 그다지 좋지 않았다. 필드를 나가면서 그는 얼굴을 찡그렸다. 아직 완전한 팔상태는 아닌 것으로 보인다. 오타니는 올시즌 안에 투수로서 복귀하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.
