On August 23rd, Shohei Ohtani became the sixth player in Major League Baseball history to achieve the rare 40 home run and 40 stolen base milestone. Ohtani reached this feat in just 129 games, surpassing Alfonso Soriano's record of 147 games set in 2006 by a significant 18-game margin.

Ohtani, often compared to Babe Ruth for his prowess as both a pitcher and a hitter, is now proving to be an even more remarkable athlete by adding speed to his repertoire. It seems likely that Ohtani won't stop at the 40-40 mark. Despite a recent slump in August, his return to form could make him a strong contender for achieving 45-45 or even 50-50, feats no player has ever accomplished.

The 40-40 club was reportedly one of Ohtani's goals before the season began. Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, recently remarked that he thought 40-40 was one of the targets Ohtani had in mind since spring training. Now, Ohtani appears to be setting his sights on the 45-45 and 50-50 milestones.

Roberts added, "He tries to dominate in every aspect. That's what makes him great."

Beyond the 45-45 or 50-50 goals, Ohtani is also eyeing the Triple Crown. While he leads in home runs and ranks second in RBIs, his batting average has dipped to the .290s, making the race for the top spot in batting average a tougher challenge.

Ohtani is also in contention for becoming the first player to win the MVP award in both leagues since Frank Robinson. Having already claimed the MVP title twice in the American League, Ohtani's chances of taking home another MVP trophy seem promising.

"I want to bring a championship to the Dodgers," Ohtani said. If he manages to achieve the 40-40 milestone, win the Triple Crown, claim another MVP, and secure a World Series title, it would mark one of the greatest seasons in baseball history. What's crucial to note is that such a season isn't a far-fetched dream but a real possibility.

오타니 쇼헤이가 23일 메이저리그 역사상 6번째로 40홈런과 40도루를 기록한 선수가 됐다. 129경기째 이 기록을 세워 알폰소 소리아노가 2006년에 147경기만에 세운 기록을 18경기나 앞섰다. 

투타에서 리그 최고의 수준을 보여 베이브 루스에 비교되는 오타니는 투타에 준족까지 보태 루스를 뛰어 넘는 선수가 되고 있다. 오타니는 40-40에서 멈추지 않을 전망이다. 8월에 부진했음에도 40-40을 달성한 그가 원래의 모습으로 돌아온다면 45-45와 50-50 달성도 충분히 가능할 전망이다. 두 클럽에 들어간 선수는 지금까지 단 한 명도 없었다.

40-40은 오타니의 시즌 전 목표였던 것으로 알려졌다. 데이브 로버츠 LA 다저스 감독은 최근 “40-40이 그가 스프링 트레이닝부터 염두에 두고 있었던 목표 중 하나라고 생각한다”라고 말한 바 있다. 이제 그의 새로운 목표는 45-45와 50-50이다.

로버츠 감독은 “그는 모든 면에서 지배하려고 노력한다. 그것이 그를 위대하게 만드는 이유다”라고 말했다. 

오타니는 45-45 또는 50-50 외에도 트리플 크라운을 노린다. 홈런과 타점에서는 1위가 가능해 보이는데 최근 타격 부진으로 타율이 2할9푼대로 떨어져 선두 탈환이 쉽지는 않을 것으로 보인다. 

그리고 그는 양대 리그 MVP 수상을 노리는데 이는 가능할 것으로 보인다. 이미 아메리칸리그에서 두 차례 MVP가 됐던 오타니가 MVP로 선정되면 프랭크 로빈슨 이후로 처음으로 양대 리그 MVP가 되는 놀라운 기록을 세우게 된다. 

오타니는 “다저스에 챔피언십을 가져오고”자 경기를 한다고 말했다. 40-40을 이뤄낸 그가 트리플 크라운, MVP, 월드시리즈 챔피언까지 가져온다면 역대급 시즌이 된다. 중요한 것은 이런 일이 허황된 일이 아니라는 것이다. ​
