대회 내내 부진했던 조규성이 돌아왔다. 김승규에 이어 제2의 골키퍼 옵션이었던 조현우도 돌아왔다. 한국은 승부차기 끝에 4-2로 승리해 2023 카타르 아시안컵 8강에 진출했다. 한국은 아시안컵에서 사우디아라비아를 4번(1984, 1988, 2000, 2007) 만나 3무 1패로 단 한 차례 승리하지 못했는데 아시안컵 사상 사우디전 첫 승을 챙겼다.
2023 아시안컵에서 3경기 출전 유효슈팅 1개만을 기록했던 조규성이 1월31일(한국시간) 카타르 에듀케이션 시티 경기장에서 열린 아시안컵 16강전 사우디전에서 추가시간 9분께 극적인 동점골을 성공시켜 경기를 1-1로 만들었다.
골을 넣기 전 99분 동안 답답함을 준 경기였다. 위르겐 클린스만호는 이전 경기와 마찬가지로 단조로운 경기를 경기 내내 펼쳤다. 대한민국은 특히 후반 중반 이후 상대를 계속 몰아세웠지만 골로 연결하지 못했다. 선수들의 골 결정적 부족보다는 뭔가 짜임새가 부족하다고 느끼게 했다.
후반 1분쯤 사우디는 긴 패스를 받은 선수가 원터치로 테이블세팅을 했고 압둘라 라디프가 곧바로 파고 들어가 골대 오른쪽에 첫 골을 꽂아 넣었다. 이후 답답한 경기가 계속 펼쳐지던 후반 추가시간 9분께. 김태환이 센터링한 공을 설영우가 골대 왼쪽에서 헤딩으로 테이블세팅을 해줬고 ‘검정 헤드밴드’의 사나이 조규성이 헤딩으로 마무리했다. 조규성은 지난해 8월 사우디와의 평가전에서도 헤딩 골을 넣은 적이 있고 월드컵 가나전에서 2골을 넣은 곳도 이곳 에듀케이션 시티였다.
조규성의 극적인 동점골 덕분에 경기는 연장전으로 돌입했다. 연장 전반은 15분 동안 서로 치열한 공방전을 펼치며 1-1 동점으로 마쳤고 연장 후반전 시작하자마자 조규성이 결정적인 추가 득점 상황에서 오른발 회심의 슛을 날렸지만 골키퍼 오른쪽으로 살짝 골문을 비켜나갔다. 이강인도 회심의 왼발슛을 날렸지만 사우디 골키퍼의 선방으로 역전골을 올리는 데 실패했다. 연장 후반을 득점 없이 1-1로 마친 경기는 승부차기로 이어졌다.
승부차기에서 한국은 손흥민, 김영권, 조규성, 황희찬이 연속 골을 넣었고 골키퍼 조현우가 3, 4번째 킥을 막아내 극적인 4-2 승리로 이끌었다.
한편, 사우디의 이탈리아 출신 감독 로베르토 만치니는 승부차기에서 2-3로 뒤진 상황에서 돌연 경기장을 떠나 팬들을 의아하게 만들었다. 2-3은 경기가 끝난 상황이 아니었다. 그는 황희찬이 마지막 골을 넣을 것으로 예견했던 것일까.
Cho Gue Sung and Jo Hyeon-woo's Dual Triumph: South Korea's Dramatic Win in Asian Cup Shootout
Cho Gue Sung, who had underperformed throughout the tournament, made a significant comeback. Jo Hyeon-woo, the second goalkeeper option after Kim Seung-gyu, also returned to form. South Korea triumphed in the penalty shootout with a 4-2 victory, advancing to the quarterfinals. This win marked South Korea's first victory over Saudi Arabia in the Asian Cup after four previous encounters (1984, 1988, 2000, 2007), which resulted in three draws and one loss.
In the 2023 Asian Cup, Cho Gue Sung, who had only managed one effective shot in three games, scored a dramatic equalizer in the 9th minute of extra time during the round of 16 match against Saudi Arabia at Qatar Education City Stadium on January 31 (Korean time), making the score 1-1.
Before scoring the goal, the match had been frustrating for 99 minutes. Under Jurgen Klinsmann, South Korea played a monotonous game, similar to previous matches. Despite continuously pressing the opponent, especially after the middle of the second half, they failed to convert these efforts into goals, highlighting a lack of coherence more than a lack of decisive finishing.
Around the first minute of the second half, Saudi Arabia executed a long pass followed by a one-touch setup. Abdullah Radif immediately penetrated the defense and scored the first goal to the right of the goalpost. Later, in the 9th minute of the second half's extra time, Kim Tae-hwan's cross was headed by Seol Young-woo to the left of the goal, setting up Jo Kyu-sung, who finished with a header. Notably, Jo Kyu-sung had previously scored a heading goal in a friendly against Saudi Arabia in August last year and scored two goals in the Education City against Ghana in the World Cup.
The match then proceeded to extra time. The first half of extra time saw a fierce battle, ending in a 1-1 draw. At the start of the second half of extra time, Cho Gue Sung took a crucial right-footed shot but narrowly missed, veering right of the goalkeeper. Lee Kang-in also attempted a decisive left-footed shot, but it was saved by the Saudi goalkeeper, failing to turn the game around. The game, remaining 1-1 in the second half of extra time, advanced to a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, South Korea succeeded with goals from Son Heung-min, Kim Young-gwon, Cho Gue Sung, and Hwang Hee-chan. Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo dramatically saved the 3rd and 4th kicks, leading to a thrilling 4-2 victory.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Italian coach, Roberto Mancini, left the stadium abruptly in a puzzling move during the penalty shootout, with the score at 2-3. This was not the end of the match. It raises the question: did he anticipate Hwang Hee-chan scoring the final goal?
